SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The fallout over accused rapist Greg Peterson has spilled out of the courtroom and onto Utah's political stage.

The Republican fundraiser is accused of sexually assaulting 4 women and has been charged

with two dozen felonies and misdemeanors.

Deb Henry, who describes herself as a concerned citizen, posted an on-line petition Sunday night.

It asks some tough questions about the Wasatch County Attorney.

Henry wonders why he didn't press charges against Peterson but Salt Lake's District Attorney did.

Henry told ABC 4,

"All I want to know is if there was something going on behind the scenes that prevented this case from being prosecuted in the first place."

Specifically, Henry wants to know if Republican leaders protected one of their own.

This is why her petition asks for the Department of Justice to get involved.

As Henry puts it,

"I think a third party would do best to kind of look into those things."

But Salt Lake’s District Attorney offers an explanation about why he prosecuted and Wasatch County didn't.

Sim Gill told ABC 4 that the Wasatch County Attorney's job was more difficult because he was limited to looking at just one case, while Gill had the "luxury" of looking at multiple cases."

Now, Republicans we talked to weren't happy with the petition.

They say this is a time to focus on the alleged victims and not to be partisan.

But Henry says this isn't about politics,

“I am more interested in an environment where a woman who has been sexually assaulted or raped feels comfortable going to her government and asking for prosecution."

ABC 4 did call the Wasatch County Attorney, but he was out of the office until Wednesday.

As for the on-line petition, nearly 20 people had signed up as of late Monday afternoon.
